What are the two best things about low maintenance landscaping? It’s easy – and eco-friendly!
If you live on a property that has a yard – no matter the size – consider yourself lucky. Even though a yard does require some maintenance, the benefits of having a piece of nature to enjoy whenever you wish is so worth it.
Thankfully there are many things you can do to make your yard as low maintenance as possible.
And the great thing about low maintenance landscaping is that it’s usually very eco-friendly because it works with nature instead of against it.

Is Our Yard Low Maintenance?
When you live on forty acres of land, it’s hard to image anything being low maintenance. True, there is always some type of outdoor work that needs to be done. But when it comes to the much smaller area that we use as our yard, we don’t spray, we pull weeds by hand or leave them to run their course, and we’re in the midst of converting our “lawn” to clover. (Currently, our lawn is made mostly of wild grasses and other wild things that chose to grow there, but the wild clover is starting to take over and we’ve also been adding clover seed.)
Indeed, mowing can be time consuming, but we were gifted a riding lawn mower so that makes Devin’s job much easier. We also don’t have any flower beds to plant and maintain yet, because I wanted to spend the first few years of us living here establishing our vegetable garden. Once we do have flower beds, I plan on planting mostly native perennials and easy to care for annuals such as marigolds.
Why You Should Plant Native Perennials
Plants that are native to your region are going to be much easier to grow than those from other climates. Now which plants are native to your specific area will, of course, depend on where you live. https://www.wildflower.org/collections/
If You’re going to Plant Annuals – These 4 are the Easiest to Care For
There are so, so many beautiful annual flowers out there. However, some of them require a lot of love and attention in order to thrive. Some people enjoy babying their flower gardens. But I’d rather spend more time growing food and less time worrying about my non-food plants. Which is why I prefer easy to care for annuals such as marigolds, scarlet runner beans, ??? and ???.
